How does one learn ragas?

Learning about ragas and learning how to present ragas are vastly different.

If one is simply talking about learning about ragas then the most useful starting point would be to grasp the theoretical aspects of what a raga is. This was alluded to in broad terms in our answer to question 4.

Second, I would recommend that one listens to as much raga material as possible including vocal, sitar, sarod, santoor, flute and other classical instruments.

Finally, a good way of learning about ragas is to go to concerts and watch the presentation of a raga by a recognised classical artist.

Learning about the presentation of the raga is more a matter of practical pro-active learning with a recognised Indian classical music teacher. Good guidance is the most essential aspect in learning how a raga is presented. Enhancing theoretical knowledge through books and other material, whilst not essential, is a most valuable aid to any learner. And listening to classical music can perhaps be the most beneficial way of learning if the beginner is taught what to listen to and what is good to listen to at their learning stage. All these elements require guidance from experienced teachers in the field and there is sadly no substitute for that.
